Volunteers
The museum is run entirely by volunteers who play a crucial role in welcoming visitors and making their experience enjoyable and memorable. Whether you're interested in wind power or the social history of the families who once lived in the Windmill, there's something for everyone at this unique museum.
Volunteering at the Museum is a great way to contribute to your local community. We receive no external funding, so all the support given to us by volunteers is an essential part of the museum’s success.
Please fill in the form below or Contact Us or speak to one of the volunteers at the Windmill.
Become a steward
Become the voice of Wimbledon Windmill Museum: Volunteer museum stewards wanted
Do you enjoy meeting new people and sharing stories? The Wimbledon Windmill Museum is
looking for enthusiastic Museum Stewards to join our dedicated team.
Standing proudly on Wimbledon Common since 1817, our Grade II* listed windmill is a unique piece of industrial
heritage. As a volunteer-run charity, we rely on the energy and warmth of our stewards to bring
this history to life for visitors of all ages.
The Role
As a steward, you are the face of the museum. You don’t need to be a historian—we provide all
the training and ‘mill facts’ you’ll need. Your main tasks will include:
-
Welcoming Visitors: Providing a friendly greeting and helping people navigate the museum floors.
-
Storytelling: Sharing fascinating insights about the mill’s construction, the lives of the millers, and its connection to the Scouting movement.
-
Supporting the Shop: Helping with small souvenir sales that contribute to our running costs and keeping the museum free for all visitors.
More than just volunteering
We pride ourselves on being a friendly, inclusive, and social place to give your time. When you
join us, you’re joining a community of volunteers.
Volunteer perks include:
-
Social opportunities: We seek to foster a strong volunteer community with regular social get-togethers.
-
On-shift refreshments: Enjoy a complimentary drink from the popular Windmill Café during every shift you work.
-
Museum discount: Get 20% off all items in the Museum Shop.
-
The best ‘office’ in London: Spend time surrounded by the natural beauty of Wimbledon Common.
Time commitment
The museum is open to the public on Saturdays, Sundays, and Bank Holidays from March
through October. We offer flexible shift patterns (morning or afternoon) to fit around your lifestyle.
How to apply
If you are friendly, reliable, and keen to support a local landmark, we want to hear from you!
Please fill in the form below to express your interest. No CV is required—just a short note about why
you’d like to join the team.
Feel good! You'll be supporting and preserving the Windmill and its Museum
Volunteers are integral to the success of the museum. Operated entirely by passionate volunteers for the past 30 years, volunteering with the Museum offers a unique opportunity to get involved in the local community and meet like-minded individuals while welcoming visitors to the Windmill and making their experience truly unforgettable.
Why join us?
Meet new people & be part of the museum community
Volunteering at the museum is a great way to meet new people. There is a real sense of community amongst our trustees and volunteers, and we really value your support and appreciate your feedback.
Volunteers also have the chance to get involved in other aspects of running the museum, such as children's activities and education programs.
Learn new skills & broaden your CV
Volunteering at the museum is also a great way to learn new skills and develop confidence in a new area of expertise (see the image below for a taster of what you could learn). You don't need to know anything about Windmills at all! You may be retired and hoping to try something new or looking to develop new skills to boost your CV and make it standout. You might prefer to help us maintain the Windmill or create new modules for the exhibitions. We welcome everyone!
We are very keen for our volunteers to become enthusiastic guides and to be able to provide tours for our visitors be they local school children, community groups or regular weekend visitors. We will offer comprehensive training. If you’re interested in getting into the world of tourism this might provide you with a good introduction and valuable experience.
